Product Description

2 lb. Hudson Bay Axe head outfitted with an 18″ curved hickory handle. One-handed camp axe. Used for light splitting, chopping, driving tent pegs, etc. The pattern is thought to have originated from “Biscayan” in Northern Spain, near France. French traders used this hand axe as a trade tool in their dealings with Native Americans for fur and other commodities in the Hudson Bay area, St. Lawrence River, and other trade routes.

Forged tool steel head. Made in USA.

  • Hand sharpened, tapered bit for cutting and light splitting.
  • ANSI Standards call for bit hardness of Rc 45-60, at least ½ inch back from the cutting edge. Council Tool internal standards call for tempered bit hardness of Rc 48-55 and we target 1-1/4 inches from the cutting edge. The poll and eye walls are not hardened and remain in the as forged condition.
  • Head coated with black enamel and the cutting edge in clear lacquer to deter rust.
  • 18″ American hickory handle. Eye section is dried to below 10% moisture content to minimize shrinkage and help prevent loosening.
  • Axe head is hydraulically seated onto handle and secured in a traditional manner with a wooden wedge and a round steel wedge.
  • The interior detail of the eye is tapered and allows for a strong mechanical bond. Approximately 1/2″ – 1 of the handle is removed during assembly making the overall length of the tool around 17″.

This is a total winner!!! Buy this axe and don’t look back!

This is a fantastic woodcraft tool and an exceptional value!

HANGING and HAFT: The head is hung perfectly. The wedge is centered in the eye and the ring wedge is centered perfectly on that. The grain alignment is the best I have seen on a production axe. Very straight and aligned perfectly with the head. There is no run-out of grain from side-to-side as you look up the handle from the bottom. The curved shape is a joy to use one or two-handed.

HEAD: The eye is centered and well formed. The alignment of the edge and handle is perfect! The edge was a plain factory grind that is ready to take to the woods right out of the box. I am a sharpening nerd, but it only required a short work-up with a honing stone to get it paper cutting sharp. At this axe price point, I didn’t expect a razor sharp edge from the factory.
I’ve always liked the sleek profile of the Hudson Bay design. It allows you to choke up for carving tasks and fine work.

IN USE:: The 18 inch handle makes it very easy to pack and the two pound head gives it plenty of striking power. The combination of the added leverage of the 18 inch handle and the head weight really deliver in the chopping and splitting department. It is holding its edge very well. And it can do fine carving tasks easily. It is just a great all around tool in the woods or around the house!

I feel no need to look further or at more expensive “small forest” axes. This one suits me fine and gets the job done!

And it’s MADE IN THE USA!

Nice US made ax. The head is hung straight. The bit was reasonably sharp, needed a little work though. The grain on the handle is straight with no run offs. Much better than the wooden handled axes I was seeing at the local hardware stores.
