Where to Buy

3.5 lbs. Michigan pattern double bit axe with a 36 in. straight handle. Michigan pattern originated from the state of the same name. Double bit axes were sometimes sharpened in different ways. One end was thinner and sharper and used for knot-free cutting; the other end was thicker and blunter and was used when knots were present or to cut near the ground where contact with dirt was likely.

  • Forged tool steel head. Made in USA.
  • Hand sharpened double bits for cutting and splitting, sharpened in the same manner.
  • ANSI Standards call for bit hardness of Rc 45-60, at least ½ inch back from the cutting edge. Council Tool internal standards call for tempered bit hardness of Rc 48-55 and we target 1-1/4 inches from the cutting edge.
  • Head coated with red enamel and cutting edges in clear lacquer to deter rust.
  • 36 in. double-bit American hickory handle. Eye section is dried to below 10% moisture content to minimize shrinkage and help prevent loosening.
  • Axe head is hydraulically seated onto handle and secured with a serrated aluminum wedge. The serrated shape improves bite and the aluminum choice of material is strong, lightweight and does not change size with moisture content.
  • The interior detail of the eye is tapered and allows for a strong mechanical bond. Approximately 1/2 in. of overall length of handle is removed during assembly.

I have been using this axe just about daily for 6 months now. While the haft is not particular high quality in terms of wood and grain orientation I can see it will last a long time. The bits are easy to sharpen and hold their edge well. The axe is well balanced and is a pleasure to use. Plus, I think the price is pretty good on this.

I’ve used this axe for 3 years now, mostly limbing and wood splitting, it is an excellent weight that I can swing all day. The head holds an edge exceptionally well, stands up to Virginia live oak, which are probably the hardest trees in the state. Oustanding product!!

This axe was left to me when my father passed on. He was old school with his wood cutting, using only hand tools. This axe was his favorite and now I still use it a few times a year splitting my firewood. Holds an edge great and sharpens easily with a stone or file. Still has the original handle after more than 30 years.

I own the double blade Council Tool axe and I’m very impressed with it. It’s a good tool and the price is very competitive! It required a lot of work to properly sharpen it before it could be used and I wish that it had come with a proper blade guard. Also, the more I learn about the Council Tool company, the better I like it! Why then, didn’t you stamp your brand name on it? Show some pride!
