Purchased 2 handles from Council too, a 36″ and this 28″. The 36 was a good quality handle with good straight grain and made a nice handle for my old axe. The 28″ is worthless and was a waste of my money. The upper end is chipped and unevenly milled making it where it wouldn’t hold an axe head if you put epoxy all over it. The grain isn’t straight at all and even if the head was milled good I wouldn’t take the time to install it for fear of it splintering upon use. Overall it doesn’t even look as if they inspect handles before shipment. Bad quality control for sure or this one wouldn’t have even left manufacturer.

Building Trust…laughable. My last review magically disappeared, so I will write another. My Boys Axe replacement handle came in with roughly 65 degree grain and a knot in it. This is unacceptable, and does not convey “made in USA”. If this review is deleted, I will gladly tell everyone I know to not purchase Council Tool due to their shady practices and inferior quality product.

I’m always a little spooked about buying an axe handle sight-unseen, for the same reason these other guys mention, but I couldn’t find this handle locally, so I mail-ordered it. I was pleasantly surprised. The grain orientation is right-on.
The top end, where it goes through the eye of the head, is a bit too small. I don’t know why handle-makers don’t, by default, make those oversized, so they could be whittled to a perfect fit.
Another knock on it, is that the slit in the top isn’t centered well.
For the price, not bad, though.

Apparently Rooster at Council Tool has drastically improved their products, because contrary to the two negative reviews from four years ago I find that Council Tool hafts are the hallmark of quality. I ordered one 28″ replacement handle from Zoro at a bargain price for a spare just in case of a break. As to grain orientation it is 90 degrees (horizontal), very tight grained and continuous butt to eye. There’s no runout indicating that It would fail from use. It is not the vertical grained orientation that is preferred by many as being the most desirable, but hey, it’s only $15. For perfectly vertical tight grained haft just buy one of the Velvicut replacement hafts, voila!

Beautiful handle no runout at all and tight vertical grain with a little curve like usual. Im always worried about buying a handle without seeing it first but I was pleasantly surprised with the 28in boys axe handle I was sent. Could not have asked for better for the price. If I was worried about having a perfect 90° vertical grain to the handle I would have just paid the extra $10 or so dollars for the premium handle like I’ve done before but I figured I’d try the standard handle and I’m glad I did. Everything council tools I have has been far better than I expected especially for the price. Great job again Rooster another win for American manufacturing.

Bought my Council Tool 70-05 Boys Axe handle from Zoro Tools. I would love to know the source Council Tool uses for their hickory. The wood is so dense and has great grain. My only complaint is that this handle has a pronounced flare at the top. I will have to trim that down before I can install.
