Velvicut® Premium 2.25# Boy’s Axe with 28 in Premium Hickory Handle

Where to Buy

Modeled after the well-known “Boy’s Axe” of the US Forest Service, this beauty takes improved performance one step further.

The Dayton patterned head features somewhat thicker cheeks than other axes in the marketplace. Its angle is approximately 25° but is slightly convex.  This superlative design feature is preferred by many tool experts, including the US Forest Service.  Its profile, in conjunction with its sharpness, provides a deep bite into wood — like American hardwoods — without sticking.  Each axe is hand-sharpened (to fit a gauge, ensuring consistency).

Handle pattern features a prominent grip and a slim body that allows the handle to flex a bit, improving the ergonomics. Its traditional pattern embodies the heirloom quality of axes from times gone by.

The “BAD AXE BOY’S AXE” is a great mid-sized tool perfect for camping or to keep handy in a vehicle or at home.  It’s small enough to split kindling but “BAD” enough to chop a small tree.  Beware:  this well-balanced axe arrives razor sharp.

  • 2.25 lbs. head will last a lifetime; we guarantee it.  (overall tool weight is right at 3.5 lbs.)
  • Forged using 5160 grade alloy steel. “Council” is displayed on one side of the head, and the other is proudly marked USA.
  • Bit is heat treated and quenched approximately 1 in. from the cutting edge, then tempered for maximum edge holding and toughness. Final hardness Rc 52-56.
  • 28 in. handle (before assembly) is made of grade “A” American hickory and selected for grain orientation and density, making it strong. Mounted to head in the traditional manner using a softwood wedge along with a round steel wedge for added security.
  • Axe head is coated with light oil to prevent rusting and to showcase the exceptional Council Tool craftsmanship.  A Linseed oil coating is applied to protect the handle.
  • Premium leather mask protects the tool and user and features a buckle for fastening, a belt slit and an embossed logo.  Like its companion axe, the sheath is MADE IN USA.

I actually bought this axe out of my desire to have a quality axe that is made in the USA.
I read some good reviews and took a chance on it.
I was so impressed with the overall quality of this axe that I bought the Velvicut Belt hatchet to go along with it.
Everything about this axe is perfect.
This is a good size and weight and yet it is not too difficult to carry around. Serves the purpose for me.
No regrets on purchasing this axe and I highly recommend it.
The quality is actually better than the big name imports, and you know who I mean.

What a terrific company and terrific axe. The axe has been phenomenal. Lightweight but rugged. Took it off day 1 and chopped down a large tree. Had a fluke splitting of my handle (my brother in law and father in law both have the same one and no issues). Sent Council a picture of it and they were phenomenal with replacing the handle for me. I’ll be a customer for life.

I have a tight collection of axes that I use from carving, felling, limbing etc… All are high quality axes from GransFors and Council with the odd flee market find.
But this axe always rises to the top. It is my go to axe for almost all work. The quality of the steel, the balance and the craftsmanship are excellent. If I had to choose only one axe out of the collection it would be the Boys Axe 2.25.

I received my new Velvicut Bad Boy’s Axe today from bensbackwoods.com and I’m impressed. The head is perfectly ground and honed to work right out of the box. It’s mounted solid of the haft centerline. The tight vertical grained hickory haft has no runout. I put it to work chopping a fresh cut 10″ fir log and with seven swings blew out a 12″ chip 2″ thick. It bites three fingers deep without sticking. This is truly a premium axe that’s a pleasure to use for big boys, too.

Disappointed with this axe and Council Tools. Bottom line: first and last Council Tool product that I will ever buy.

I have had this axe for approximately one year. It was only used to fell a couple of trees and for tree clean up after its purchase. Recently, I got the axe out for additional projects in the yard. Within 10 minutes of use the handle separated from the head leaving the handle in my hands and the axe head in a log. The wedge remained in the eye of the axe head with a staple in the wedge center, but there is no “round steel wedge for added security” to safely fasten the head to the handle.

The best that I got from customer service was to promise to send a replacement handle when it is available. Given its premium price, limited use, and relatively short ownership, more was expected from Council Tool (e.g. exchange for new axe for quality control purposes).
