The Council Jersey Axe (sport utility finish) is possibly the most well-rounded, usable and practical felling axe that can be had in America today.
Compared to the imported hardware store units I’ve used in the past, this piece of Council hardware is perfectly balanced. The handle profile makes for superb ergonomics and accurate, consistent strokes. The grain is straight–in fact, every axe on the rack had perfect grain and hanging.
As far as the 3.5 lb head, the axe feels extremely light to carry and to swing. It was ground perfectly, and I’ve only touched it up with a Lansky puck once after maybe a dozen logs felled and bucked. Seems to hold an edge really well and doesn’t develop any nicks or chips with normal use. I was a little worried that it wouldn’t have the necessary heft to power through wood. After a few hours of working with it, I can confidently say that balance and sharpness are far more important. I’m a pretty average guy at 165 lbs and I can get more done with this axe with less fatigue. The lighter weight is even more welcome for felling strokes–more control and more accurate targeting save your back and hands.
And let’s be real: this is a handmade-in-USA axe sold at $40 alongside imported axes with zero quality control for $30. For ten more dollars you get an axe that you might keep for decades, one that you’ll enjoy and be proud to pull out on a campsite, trail clearing job or just to break a sweat in your back woods.
The Velvicut models may be superior in looks and performance, but with the Jersey Axe you won’t feel like you need to baby it. It has the right price point, the right features and the right construction to perform like a high quality and trustworthy tool for any woodsman or enthusiast.
10/10 would buy again (but I need the hookeroon next)

Wow.
After cutting down a few trees on my property, I am a believer in American steel and hickory. Incredibly sharp and an excellent tool. The 3.5 lb Jersey with 36″ hickory handle is my new go to axe. I purchased the mask and I’m glad I did because the blade is sharp enough to be dangerous left uncovered. I also picked up the Council sharpening puck. The whole setup is in a class by itself at this price or even 3 times the price.

I love the new sport utility line and council tools listening to the consumer unlike so many other companies out there today.I was gifted a boys axe back 8 more years ago and its still a excellent axe after I fixed it up to my liking 👍 I gifted to my son and have wanted another.I now have purchased 3 from the sport utility line and wow each has come sharp just a touchup on the handle and off into the woods. If I have any issues it’s with the last retailer I picked one up from.I live in Canada and it’s not as easy as walking into a store most items I have to order and this is my second jersey 3.5 pound 36inch handle axe again nothing against the axe nor council tools I unfortunately find that 36inch handles are not comfortable for my frame and style,to my knowledge council only does the 32inch curved handle in the gorgeous jersey patern with the forged bevels and besides that 36inch handles unless custom are the longest handle available. To make a long storyshort the last place I ordered from described the axe I truly want and the product description even moreover made me believe I’d found the one I needed.I ordered gifted the one I had as my neighbor was always 👁 it and I had a valid reason and bang I ended up with same axe🪓.I called the retailer and was told that it’s a 32inch axe as he was measuring others in his warehouse from the bottom of the lugs or head downand he’d contact council tools to make a decision how to proceed.I must say that the 36inch jersey I’m reviewing is a excellent axe nothing against it nor CT I’ve been blown away with each and every one and I’ve been swinging axes since I was a kid on the farm and have worked the forestry industry nearly a third of my life it’s just unfortunate that people who run some of these websites or business owners are not teaching their staff correctly.
