Where to Buy

5 lbs. Fallers single bit axe with a 28 in. straight wooden handle. A mid-sized felling axe for general axe chores including driving wedges. Cutting edge is approximately 5″ of overall length and the poll is square.  Newly designed head has a larger poll, balanced head and wedge shaped balde with chamferred poll.

  • Forged tool steel head. Made in USA.
  •  5 lbs. head weight.
  •  4 ¾” Bit length from toe-to-heel.
  •  7 3/8” Overall head length from bit-to-poll.
  •  Longer poll for balance, and a larger surface area, including chamfered poll corners, so that it does not cause excessive damage while driving HDPE plastic felling wedges.
  •  Balanced head from front to back, with the center of mass within the eye, which reduces head-roll/blade-drop.
  •  Convex bevels/bit.  Doubles as a decent splitting axe, using a wedge-shaped blade, with a high centerline, to help keep the axe head from sticking while splitting.
  • ANSI Standards call for bit hardness of Rc 45-60, at least ½ inch back from the cutting edge. Council Tool internal standards call for tempered bit hardness of Rc 48-55 and we target 1-1/4 inches from the cutting edge. The poll and eye walls are not hardened and remain in the as forged condition.
  • Head coated with red enamel and cutting edge in clear lacquer to deter rust.
  • 28 in. straight American hickory handle. Eye section is dried to below 10% moisture content to minimize shrinkage and help prevent loosening.
  • Axe head is hydraulically seated onto handle and secured with a serrated aluminum wedge. The serrated shape improves bite size and the aluminum choice of material is strong, lightweight and does not change size with moisture content.
  • Approximately 1/2 in. of overall length of the handle is removed during assembly.

This axe is a fantastic companion for driving wedges in large trees, chopping out pinched bars, and splitting of straight-grained logs. The head is well balanced while the rafting-style poll allows for efficient energy transfer from each blow. The straight handle is well proportioned but could use a greater palm swell at the knob. A 5-lb. head is a bit excessive for most applications, and the relatively long head does not fit in my weaver belt sheath. A 4-lb. version with a 26″ handle would be more appropriate for a fallers axe.

These painted head versions are rather silly. I was able to find a sport utility addition with the forge finish and a poplar wedge, which is far more desirable.
